Fees and Billing From 1 November 2025

From 1 November 2025, Medicare bulk billing incentives have expanded, meaning that Medicare-eligible patients may be eligible for bulk billed consultations, depending on the type of appointment and the Medicare item claimed.

At Unanderra Family Doctors, billing arrangements are determined by the independent general practitioners consulting at the practice, in accordance with Medicare rules and individual patient circumstances. Bulk billing occurs when the Medicare rebate is accepted as full payment for an eligible service, resulting in no out-of-pocket cost for that consultation.

Bulk billing is not guaranteed for every consultation and may depend on:

  • the nature and length of the appointment

  • Medicare eligibility

  • the Medicare item number being claimed

Patients Who May Be Eligible for Bulk Billing

  • Patients who may be eligible for bulk billed consultations include:

    • Medicare-eligible patients, in line with current Medicare bulk billing incentives

    • Children and young people

    • Concession or pension card holders

    • Eligible Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) card holders

Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the independent general practitioner providing the consultation.

Services Commonly Bulk Billed

The following services are commonly bulk billed when eligible under Medicare:

  • Standard doctor consults

  • Chronic disease management plans

  • Health assessments

  • COVID-19 and influenza vaccination administration

Other services may attract a fee depending on Medicare eligibility and the clinical nature of the consultation.

Why are fees charged for some medical services at Unanderra Family Doctors?

Unanderra Family Doctors is a predominantly bulk-billing practice. Where patients and services are eligible under Medicare, consultations continue to be bulk billed.

However, Medicare does not permit bulk billing for all patients or all services. In circumstances where a service or patient is not eligible for bulk billing, a private fee applies.

It is important to note that the doctors who consult at Unanderra Family Doctors are independent medical practitioners. While the practice provides consulting rooms, clinical facilities, staffing, and administrative support, each doctor independently determines their own billing arrangements and consultation fees, in accordance with Medicare rules and professional guidelines. The practice itself does not set doctors’ fees.

The costs associated with delivering high-quality general practice care continue to increase, while Medicare rebates do not always fully cover the cost of providing every service. Where bulk billing is not available, private fees help ensure that medical services can continue to be provided safely and sustainably.

Fees charged by doctors consulting at the practice are set below the current recommended fee schedule published by the Australian Medical Association (AMA). In accordance with Medicare guidelines, eligible Care Plans and Health Assessment consultations will continue to be bulk billed.

Patients are encouraged to discuss billing and Medicare eligibility at the time of booking or prior to their appointment, so there are no unexpected costs.

What if I need a form signed?

There may be a charge for certain forms that require a signature from your doctor or for certifying copies. Some forms, such as those required by government agencies, may be completed during a consultation and be eligible for a Medicare rebate. However, for forms that are not considered eligible by Medicare, such as those for visa purposes or certifying copies, there will be an additional fee. Please inform our reception team when booking an appointment if you will need your doctor to complete a form, and they will provide you with information about any associated fees and ensure that the necessary time is allocated for the task.

How do I pay the consultation fee if not bulk billed?

All fees must be paid on the day of your consultation.
We accept a variety of payment methods, including cash, EFTPOS, Mastercard, and Visa.
